  • Sometimes I joke about keeping track of how much I lie at my job. Today I decided to actually do it.

I made a sheet with areas for hash marks - when I'm asked to lie (for example, when someone doesn't want to talk to a caller and I have to say they are in a meeting to get the caller to submit to voicemail), when I know to lie instinctively (caller is an obnoxious rep and nobody ever wants to talk to him so they automatically get the bum rush right into the void), and those rare times when I tell the truth (so-and-so is out of the office for real). There was even a space for those times a caller hears my name wrong, calls me "Gloria" and doesn't get corrected. Every little thing counts. The tally ran for about 2 hours, but then I had to quit because it was just depressing.

Maybe I'll try it again some day, not for my own personal edification, but because I think it'd make a great infographic to bring to the next review wherein I ask for a huge raise.
