  • We called them "captains" because my father had bought them for us on one of the few times I remember him visiting us, and we had confused what my mother had said about his being a Captain in the Air Force with the rubber shoes he had purchased.

    "Flip flops...those are flip flops" my cousin had protested as we chortled and howled at her ridiculous ignorance, and the marvelously outrageous sound of the strange words she called our captains.
