  • I squeezed myself into the child’s desk; antique with an indentation for pencil or pen, an inkwell (empty for at least 40 years) and wondered what it would be like to write on a laptop at my first desk.
How this treasure survived and traveled so far with me I cannot fully recall, it simply has. It came to me as a gift in 1962. I had just learned to write words with a pencil (albeit with the wrong grip to protect my sucking thumb from touching the pencil). It was an object of great pride inside which I kept all my most important scribbles. For decades it also housed a collection of birthday cards. Over the last 50 years it has lived in Kent, in London, in New York City, in Aspen and now finds itself serving ornamental purpose in Connecticut.
I opened it that day, but sadly the scribbles and birthday cards were gone. Inside I found a telephone power cord that warned “CAUTION: Risk of Electric Shock, Dry Use Only. Clearly the cord had no use whether dry or wet, so I threw it away. I looked for some paints, made a primitive painting (when were mine ever not primitive?) and stuffed it in the desk. My desk would now have a creative life once more, perhaps a less imaginative one than before, yet certainly a more mature one. Clicking away on my laptop, I realized what I really wanted for my next birthday was a quill feather pen and some ink.
