  • You were one of my first loves.
I was early blown-away by your tales.

Ben I always love your stories...
    lobster adventures on Little Gott
navigating the rocks of rugged Maine
there’s even a town with my last name.

Joshing aside, the carpenter in you inspires respect
for the project-guy with hippie dignity
the self-made manufacturer of the thing you need.

    But today...
today I fell in love with you anew.
The builder’s eye tuned to America.
The poet’s heart broken by ruin
diseased limbs on that old apple tree.

I have always liked the teacher in you
(collegial traits that come off the page)
but today mister you ripped the lesson
from the dear pages close to the heart.

    Thank you for that.

Post scriptum: A week ago it was Bert with a challenge (But it’s a Lion), Frederick had a hope (United We Stand, Divided We Fall) & today it’s Beth (Food For Victory) & Ben’s lament (Tyranny of Best Practice). Is something stirring in the heart of her? America. Something deeper than the 4th of July?
