  • I was poor once. My father lost all his money when I was ten years old and our life changed. This was in Bogota, Colombia, when I was in love with all the beautiful things I had and my life was the life of a little princess. My family went from a comfortable suburbia existence to a hard reality of lacking .I do believe that it was a wonderful lesson but I only knew this many years later. I never took anything for granted, I did not have for many years a new dress and I only could wear the second hand dresses of my sisters. Something very deep happened to me. I felt very rich if someone gave me an ice cream. Before it was a normal thing of my childhood routine. Now the ice cream tasted like the most delicious and heavenly food and I felt rich just to hold it and to have it.
I never looked at a person for what they had but I learned to see people for what they were. That was the more important of all my lessons. I saw friends of my father moving away because of our financial situation. I saw another come closer and help and at that early age I understood many things about human hearts..
It is so easy to be good friends when things go well and when things turn to the other side you see which ones are the real ones .In Spanish we have a saying that goes “from the tree that is down all the people would like to take a piece"
I never had a birthday celebration after that and Christmas was always a quiet affair. I played on the streets with my cousins and we went to see the competitions of Nativities than in South America are most important than the Christmas Tree.
I never worried.I always knew that is was a superior force that was going to help me in times of need and It always happened.
Today I am a grown up woman but my childhood lessons stayed with me forever.
I do believe that life is so transitory and when we die we cannot take any material possessions ,Ferrari's, Porsche's etc and we all travel in the same Economy class. The only way to upgrade to First Class is through the love that we put into this world, through the compassion. Those are things we can take with us. I am glad as I always travel with too many useless things. I know the day I have to leave this planet I would travel so light because of the love that had been always in my heart.
I do not mean that If we have things we cannot enjoy them. They are part of life and to have fun with .What I mean is when all what we have in our life is reduced to a price tag is something wrong with it.. There are so many wonderful avenues to explore this unique life and sometimes we have to go without something to appreciate what we have it. That is not only with things but with many other areas in our life. To appreciate a good company we have to learn the meaning of loneliness and to appreciate health we have to learn the meaning of an illness and to appreciate the sun we have to go through many clouds and storms to smile at the king of sky and say welcome. To understand the light we have to be in the darkness and to understand darkness we have to be in the light. To appreciate happiness we have to go through suffering and to appreciate peace we have to be in turmoil.
I learned since I was ten years old that life was my best classroom.
