  • I sat outside in my backyard this morning, drinking a cup of coffee and talking to my dog.

"So buddy, what do you think about the current Presidential race?"

    The dog yawned.

"Me too," I said. "Seen any good movies lately?"

    The dog blinked three times.

    "Me either," I said.

I took a sip of coffee. I filled the bird feeder. My dog nibbled some grass and carried a stick around the yard. I sat back down and we resumed our conversation.

I asked the dog if he had any advice for me as to how to navigate better concerning matters of the heart.

The dog snorted, laid down, and began licking himself.

    "I hear you," I said.

I listened to the birds singing. I watched the leaves on the trees dance in the wind. I picked up the hose and watered the flowers -then gave my dog a drink from the hose too. I told my dog that I wanted to write something this morning - but was coming up empty when it came to ideas.

"Write about our conversation," the dog said. "I love it when you write about me, and so do they."

"Thanks, buddy," I said. "When you're right, you're right."
