  • Penny: I’m going to make this easy for both of us and vanish again.
Nicholas: You going away doesn’t make me happy. I want to see you again.
Penny: Vanishing would make you feel less guilty.
Nicholas: Time would do the same.
Penny: Time has not been our friend.

Earlier this year, my friend Katie Winther and I were writing a mini-screenplay about an emotional affair. It's about the versions of people we create in our heads, the stories we script and the scenes we choose to play out -- our own Pygmalions staged in real-time delusions. Sometimes fantasy is so much more true than reality -- but it has no sticking power.

Katie reminded me of our heroine when she told me her 2012 mantra: "Never let a guy become your priority while allowing yourself to become his option." I think this is a good mantra for all aspects of life, not only relationships.

We'd live differently if we scripted ourselves as the heroes of our real-life stories.

And so, we salute Penelope every time we run over the Williamsburg Bridge.
