  • I was listening to Ralph Stanley sing. He was the closing act for the weekend at the Windgap Bluegrass Festival. A bluegrass icon, Ralph Stanley is a very old man now but his voice is still strong. This is a song that he wrote and he sang for us that day.

Springtime is coming in the mountains, however on the hill where daddy lay
All the song birds are singing, when a robin built a nest on daddy’s grave

I planted dad a rose sometime ago, oh—to me how it did grow
Springtime is coming I’m glad to say, and a robin built a nest on daddy’s grave

Oh the rose blooms so red, and spread its bloom for that day
Then a robin came one day and there she built a nest on daddy’s grave

Oh the rose how it bloomed, I believe the Lord is coming soon
That’s what the rose it seems to say and a robin built a nest on daddy’s grave

I planted dad a rose sometime ago, oh—Lord how it did grow
Springtime is coming I’m glad to say, and a robin built a nest on daddy’s grave.
And a robin built a nest on daddy’s grave

Tears wet my face as the old man sang his simple mountain song. Billy looked over and then took my hand, holding it tight. My father passed away in February and I still mourn. I felt sorrow remembering how much I loved my daddy. I miss him.
