  • It took a lot of effort to get myself "into" running. I traded in my 4 year old sneaks for a pair that didn't torture me. After a little while I found my favorite routes and times: take off around 8pm, head down Freeman Parkway, left up Blackstone Boulevard, turn off at Rochambeau Avenue, back onto Morris Avenue towards home. Regardless of every day's novelty, that run was consistent. And I was getting really good at it.

    But I was getting bored with it. Well, I couldn't have articulated that, but my body lost interest. I fell out of the habit. This hiatus didn't last too long; my love for running gave me the momentum to once again set the intention and lace up my sneakers....

    Take off around 8pm, head down Freeman Parkway... Then, in a moment of pure volition, I turned right down Arlington Avenue! At the next junction, I made another new choice! Suddenly my typical evening jog was a liberating exercise in spontaneity. I could quite simply go wherever I wanted to go, in that very moment of choice. So, I did! I ran by the river, stopped to star gaze, stared at the capitol building for a while, and eventually my feet lead me home.

    Breathe, listen and act upon what is observed. There's no need to build stress into our choices; we have all the tools. I've saddled myself with patterns, habits, beliefs, and expectations for far too long. It has clouded my perspective, occluding the true vastness of my freedom. Sure, from time to time life necessitates a routine, but habits can stick. And man oh man, habits can oppress.
