  • I was such a total bitch on vacation. It was the ocean's fault. Completely.
All of us, all five of us, the family of us attempted a vacation... to get away to the coast for a few days. Honoring the feeling of self-entitlement, I took some savings and we headed to the coast for some R &R.
Like I said, it wasn't my kids fault, it was the ocean's. Even the drive down, with the inconceivable amount of "Are we there yets?" did not compare to the torrent of waves pounding, threatening to pull my children out to sea. I couldn't relax for even a moment, sitting on the edge of my nerves.
My kids, in between their squeals of laughter, diving head first into the waves, did tell me that I was just the eency-weeinsiest bit over-protective. I saw a different face on the ocean this trip and took it personally.
The ocean felt so alive, like an animal ready to pull them by their ankles to a watery grave. Not a machine to conquer or risk to take, but a force acting on them. An undertow threatening to take away all that I hold precious. The pros did not outweigh the cons for me.
And it's such a strange place to find myself and even a little surprised, for someone who wants to raise children who take risks, who loves a good adventure herself.
But the ocean, that ocean, the beast. I'm not sure how we will ever be friends again.
