  • Bombing Range Art Studio......... I guess it's a studio....... it's not like any other studio that I see in magazines or those fancy artists have down in Santa Fe! It's a crazy little addition my dad and I built on the side of the barn. It's not hardly insulated which is crazy cause it gets 100 in the summer and -30 in the winter but though it all....... art gets made!
One winter the water table came up through the wood floor I have and every morning I would suck out 40 gallons of water with the shop vac before I could work. I have a cat, DC, who lives there and is probably the single most living thing I have spent the most time with over the 12 yrs he has been around. He knows the rules of the shop..... not to interrupt me when I'm carving or putting inlay into my jewelry.
A few years ago I had to put in a cat door for him, he can now go directly into the barn. Before that I would prop open the door (winter and summer) so he could go in and out and do his thing but, in the winter I would get snow drifts in the "studio" and then after heating it up all day I would have to prop it open and and it would lose all it's heat and be cold all night...... poor cat! One day a few summers ago I opened the door and DC was standing there like a halloween cat...... and right on the other side of him was a rattle snake! DC had stopped me and probably saved me a miserable day. A few weeks ago DC was staring at something under my work desk. I stopped and was checking out what he was looking at cause I trust him now that when he pays attention to something, well then, there is something there! Sure enough it was the KING of BULLSNAKES! I tried to get him out but, there was just too many places for him to hide. I had to just let him go and hope he would leave......he must have cause I haven't seen the cat acting all strange since and nothing has crawled across my shoes....... YET!
In the spring time we have branding and all the help we get uses the "studio" as a place to hang out and BS. It's alright I just have to hide all my work and good tools. And after it's all done I have lots of bull shit to shovel out. Some of those ol cowboys can really tell some tall ones!
Anyway, it's a pretty lively place you never know what's gonna happen. It's in the middle of the Bombing Range on Pine Ridge Rez and there is not another art "studio" like it in the world! Plus, the most amazing art comes out of it and you'll never see anything like it anywhere else but here on the Rez!
