  • It was 1972, i was 13(with braces on my teeth)and staying with aunt and uncle and their 4 daughters at Mission Flat on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. One day i and cousins arrived at the house and my aunt was asleep on the couch (passed out) with blood on her head, we woke her and got the blood off and realized her and her husband were drinking and fighting. He was walking around with jug in one hand and a rifle in the other and finally we were all cornered in the bedroom with the oldest daughter standing between husband and wife with lotsa yelling going on and some how managed to lock him out of the house. What does he do? Unplugs the electricity from the yard pole, damn! So we lickety split, all us women and girls into that big ol' boat of a car and drive to Rushville Nebraska for a motel room. You know the place, unglorified motor inn, cheap formica, simulated plastic wood grain, one big bed and avocado green shag carpet! So there we are and I'm lying on my side on the floor with my head in my hand and we are telling stories and laughing and joking and trying to diffuse from the situation and my head slips down and my braces get caught in the carpet!!!!We all had a good laugh at that while i struggle to get untangled which thankfully did'nt take long, damn embaressing moment but it sure was funny and somethin i will never forget.
