  • For gym we wore a uniform: black sateen, very full bloomers, a white middy blouse, black tie, black cotton stockings and white tennis shoes. In the dressing room it was total chaos, stockings and ties flying. In class, Sister took attendance. We answered, “Present, full dress.” But let’s say you couldn’t find your tie, and so you flung a stocking around your neck. Then you answered, “Full dress, stocking hanging out.” That was a half absence, to be avoided. We did calisthenics, marched and passed a ball around. Competition was forbidden as unladylike. It wasn’t worth getting undressed for, really.

Material from the oral history of Sister Jameen Mape, OSB, 1906-1995, member of the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota, on her high school experience at the Sisters' academy.
