  • Intense tilt of land,
    ruthless sun, beats down.
    Grasshoppers popping, cicadas clacking
    Hiking boots stir up dust,
    grab gravel.

    Expanse of cornflower sky,
    absorbs ricocheted heat,
    saddles up, atop
    layers of stacked sediment.
Buttery khakis, browns, and rugged rusts,
    compressed and skewed,
    served up,
    on Earth’s tectonic plates,
    garnished with pygmy juniper,
    and pinyon.

    Optical illusion of a land
    off kilter,
    akimbo,
    cockeyed.

    But I feel only
    Freedom
    in my smallness.
