  • She may not know it yet, or she may not think it'll happen, but she will find herself breathless in the moving water. Watching boys jump- quick feet, flung limbs, breath held- submerged in ice water. Shoot out, shake head, rub arms in an attempt to feel something. They jump to escape the world. For a brief moment- their thoughts, their worries, their responsibilities- are submerged in a dark world, where people glide, eyes closed and hands buoyant. They jump to feel everything- life lost in between the edge of the rock and the water's edge- their whole self spread among the air surrounding the pines. The water shocks them back to an Earthly state, yet numbs them from the pain that fills their heads. She will soon join them in their numbed world of mud and mosquitoes and sap, where the dark water will freeze her thoughts, for a moment, and reawaken her senses.
