  • Obsession is a working
    boat in the harbor
that I slip past just slow enough
just close enough to see the
    clingwrap wad from yesterday's
sandwich left behind on the helm.

I am nearing my third decade and am entirely new to swimming. I can float on my back, sometimes. I can granny-style backstroke in a very quiet pool. Until last summer, I couldn't put my nose or ears in water, even in a tub mind you, without my entire body trying to climb/claw the air/water to get it back out again. It was this reason alone that plans made by 6yearold me of being a marine biologist were thoroughly thwarted.

I have only caught blue gill, crappies, crawdaddies, trout and one catfish. I felt sorry for the catfish as I watched its body heave and stutter at the air. I stared at it and it seemed to stare back at me. And to the horror of the boys I was fishing with, I carefully slid it from the blue igloo cooler and back into the muddy pond with a forehead wrinkled "I'm sorry" whisper.

I cannot tie any sort of knots in anything other than shoelaces, ribbon, balloon tails, and my stomach.

Clearly, in a boat on the ocean is not the correct place for my being to be.

Yet it was. I cannot help but grin wildly at the breakdown of logic, give myself over completely to the moment and realize that I am in way over my head.
