  • Anxiety is like an infestation.
    First you notice one dark thought, scuttling across your brain, seemingly harmless. Then it comes back, bringing friends. Next thing you know, the dark thoughts are overshadowing your lovely mind.
    How dare they? What gives this anxiety the right to intrude upon your carefully organized thoughts, shaking them up and causing you to doubt everything you think you know?
    The mind is an incredible place. But sometimes it malfunctions.
    My mind malfunctions from time to time. I have panic attacks.
    Apparently it's quite common, especially in people who also struggle with anxiety. But somehow that knowledge doesn't make me feel better. In fact, it upsets me. Why do so many people worry? Why are we weighed down by our fears? I know how crippling this anxiety can be. I know how frustrated and helpless a panic attack can leave you feeling. I hate it for myself and I hate it for everyone who suffers from it.
    I may sound terribly childish for saying this, but I'm going to anyway: I wish I could wrap everybody up in a big hug and send them a calming message saying it will all be ok. Anxiety will not defeat us.
