Last night the fireflies let loose.
After dark, into the moonless starry expanse
They pulsed on and on and on
Sparking messages across the velvet earth.
The feverish flash, the dappled dazzle
Hundreds, no thousands of winking bodies
Flirting with the impassive stars
Urging them to echo, no, to surrender to the rhythm
Of small shifts of the grass, wild currents of the air, a murmuration of lights--
The sudden crescendo of fleeting life.
C’mon c’mon c’mon
The silent ripple and flicker
The blink of
Saturday night love or the end of something or both.
Give in to it. Risk it. Risk everything.
Dance, fly, dizzy the air.
