  • T. Lawrence Shannon: Nothing could be worse for
a girl in your unstable condition, to be mixed up with
a man in, in my unstable condition because two people
in unstable conditIons are like two countries facing
each other in unstable conditIons. The, eh, destructive
potential, eh, could blow the whole world to bits!

Tennessee Williams, in The Night of the Iguana

So I said to Harry I said "What do you know, I mean what do YOU know about iguanas?"

And Harry, dense as he is, said "That is a lizard, a plain old lizard."

And I said "For God's sake Harry, where have you been all of your life? That is an honest to goodness iguana."

And Harry, in his damnable patient voice that he only uses when he knows I am about to become hysterical said "Dear, there are not any iguanas in Scarsdale. I know that for a fact, and besides, that lizard is mud colored, and iguanas are avocado colored."

That's what he said, "Avocado colored." If you can believe it.

So I said to him, "Harry, just because you spent a weekend in Tijuana in 1970 doesn't mean you are an authority on the flora and fauna of Mexico."

And so Harry, shuffling the cards for the umpteenth time said "Dear, it is a lizard if I say it is a lizard, and I refuse to discuss the matter any further."

Can you imagine that, I mean, can you imagine?
