Brain injury story on TV after midnight in a seedy hotel, somewhere in Canada. Tears rolling down the face of a young man who cannot talk but could see what his life was never going to be, as his brother spoke to him. He could not do anything else and was later pronounced to be in a vegetative state. But those tears linger with me days later. A person trapped in a body, with the hope leaking out.

Too long on the bus across the prairies. Reflecting on a real life murder program last night on TV. I love watching them but they disturb me so. How do such ordinary people become so evil? A woman washing up hears crying in the forest near her house. She goes looking only to find a beautiful young woman beaten and assaulted, barely conscious but crying as her life ebbs away.

I go whale watching and unexpectedly find myself crying when I see them. I don’t know what it is about the whales that make me cry just by looking at them.
