  • Attention Cowbird Campers! There will be an inspection of your story logs at 20:00 tonight UTM. Be prepared. Make sure that you have kept track of all time spent by notating the appropriate column entries. Be prepared for random reviews of your stories. Counselors will be looking not just for incorrect spelling and punctuation, but also for maudlin self-references, overused tropes, dangling participants and run-on lives. For each infraction, one key on your keyboard will be disabled for 24 hours.

Seriously, folks, I flew into Cowbird Country just over two weeks ago, and boy are my fingers tired! Ever since landing, I've been trying to find a suitable voice. Even though I can't resist posting most days, I always ask myself "Who needs this?" As I don't know you all very well yet, I persist in littering (litrying?) somewhat at random hoping our threads will become a fabric.

I'm with Alex. No matter what you're up to creatively, more discipline never hurts. So here are some resolutions for myself:

    As a reader

    • Learn to search Cowbird better, so I'm not always trying to bite of more than I can digest.

    • Linger on stories that grab me somehow and see what else the author has to say.

    • Make love only when a story feels real, essential, unique, resonant.

    • Chew. Swallow. Savor.

    As a writer

    • Expand on themes that draw me to them, in ways that can engage readers

    • Attend to where the world is spinning us and making, wanting us to become.

    • Work on making my writing simple, accessible and numinous.

    • Revise ruthlessly to say what's necessary and no more.

    • Sprout, dedicate, collaborate.

    • Know when to shut up and move away from the computer.

Over and out. Lights out at 2230.
