  • Moving back to Merseyside after living in Hertfordshire for 18 years rates very highly in my lifetime achievements. At the same time it was very stressful. Although I was originally from Liverpool my wife and children had been born and bred in Hertfordshire and I still planned to work in London. Fortunately the family, apart from yours truly, adjusted and adapted almost seamlessly. Personally I found leaving home each week to continue working in London very depressing and I found myself constantly worrying about leaving my family alone in their new environment.
During one phone call home my son, who at the time was two and a half years old, asked "Daddy. Why are you not here??" How do you explain to a child the reasons for the separation??
This was more or less the final straw and not long after I quit my job.
