  • In a few minutes it will begin.

Preparations for travel will become final until we are out the door and asking the question: "Did I forget anything?"
Then there will be a moment where that no longer matters,
what is forgotten will remain forgotten.

It should have happened yesterday, the travel,
but a graceless exit from the week of work clung to our efforts.
The little list of "One more thing," kept growing.
As we approached the end of the week , it added another day.

The force of gravity is strong and it takes momentum to break free.
A late afternoon phone call to say we are delayed gives back news.

What had been one line of a note from earlier in the week, had been a hint of what might come.
One line that conveyed so much because it was not unexpected,
just pushed aside for a while.

One line sandwiched between two peices of good news could not disguise the contors of the old terror.

I could use the words, "Intensive care" and "Stress tests" and complications with internal bleeding, blood thinners working overtime.
I could say twenty years of heart medicine stretch the limit of effectiveness.
    Or I coulds say,
Tonight I will have dinner with my parents,
    in my father's hospital room.

The sun is up and I must be on my way.
