  • "Writing is the lie that tells the truth."

Dennis Lehane said that to a group at the Nevins Library in Methuen last night. A magical storyteller. He was funny as all get-out. And, he has perfect comic timing. Surprising from a man whose stories are DARK. He told the truth about his family and his life and talked about writing.

The lie that tells the truth. Writing. Writers find the truths and weave them into fiction and poetry, masking the who what and where - sometimes lightly and sometimes heavily covered in adjectives and adverbs. We linger on a single moment or focus on an event and stop time.

What a gift to be able to give someone, the truth, clothed in frothy gauze or pink camo or maybe lumberjack plaid. And we thank them for the memories, the tears, the laughter, the questioning, the seeking, the love, and the violence. We are grateful for all the emotions wrung out of those specific people and places trapped in that moment like bugs in amber.

Writing is the lie that tells the truth.
