  • (Special) - A butterfly has just had its life history
    disclosed
Perhaps the most detailed history every made
    The Gold-Banded Skipper

    little known
rare creature of the early summer
    damp woods and stream sides
    peculiar physical structure

    Through six stages
for each, it builds a new house
    most of which it destroys
when it has finished with them.

    Chrome-yellow caterpillar
crawls out of its skin five times
    newly emerged creature
    differing notably each time

    then comes a radical change
    For protection
    during its helpless days
    suspended animation

    a waxen overcoat
    lavender-tinted
    emerges the butterfly
    its final period of existence

The life pattern roughly approximates that of butterflies in general
    some, however, have fewer stages.
