  • Tonight I went to the fashion show for the sewing class my mom took, as each woman in the program modeled their outfits. My mom has been retired for a few years now, and I bugged and bugged her for a while to get out and do something, and for me, that usually means ‘take some classes!” She took an actual semester-long community college photoshop class one year, but recently she had started taking a course here and there and the community college continuing education center, cooking classes and now, sewing classes.

Growing up my mom was always very supportive of the endeavors of her four boys. She would attend whatever little award or recognition ceremony we were included in, often making a scene as she fought to get front and center to take pictures. One time, when I was in college and after she had moved to San Diego, she drove the 150 miles to my school and back in one night just to see me get some little certificate, the whole ceremony lasting an hour.

My older brother said that when he was in high school drama, on stage under the bright lights, he would look into the audience and be able to see nothing, except for the red light from my mom’s photo or video camera.

So the least thing I could do is go to her class fashion show.
