I felt like a stalker watching this Shenzhen apartment building in the darkness of my hotel room. I couldn’t help it. I studied these families finish dinner, wash up and prepare for bed. By no means are these foreign concepts - I could easily do this in New York or anywhere else in the world.
I wondered how different these families were. Did they come from the rural areas? Did they work in the factories? This particular building didn’t look like the dormitories that line the highways. What do they worry about before they hit their pillows? Do they sleep on pillows? (I don’t.) How did they get here? Is this home? Where do they want to go?
The more places I go, the more things begin to feel the same.
