  • Someday, after mastering the winds,
the waves, the tides and gravity, we
shall harness for God the energies of
love, and then, for a second time in
the history of the world, man will have
    discovered fire.

    Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

As a species, and as individuals, we are in the midst of an all-encompassing journey of transformation – and if we live it righteously, with humility, grace and spiritual purpose, it will be a journey toward greater awareness, compassion, cooperation, and most of all, love. As Artists, are we committing ourselves and our work to the darkness, or to the Light?

    How then shall we love?

The center is now everywhere, and the old boundaries of time and space dissolve daily, putting us in touch with the eyes, ears, hearts and minds of anyone, anywhere who tunes in to an iPod, iPhone, TV screen, satellite radio or website. New personal media technologies are now developing faster than we can figure out how to use them. With the flick of a switch, click of a mouse, touch of a screen, we can now sculpt in real time thoughts, images, scenes, songs and celebrations that can circle our world in nanoseconds. As Artists, are we creating works which will bring enlightenment right now in this bright new planetary theater, and which will, like our world’s greatest art, endure the shifts and changes of centuries, and still retain the power to shape culture and perception to the higher good?

    How then shall we live?

Are we willing to make art that makes a difference, brings understanding, inspires good works, brings down walls of hostility and ignorance, dissolves hatred, warms hearts, promotes healing, removes fear, and awakens a sense of compassion and caring for all living beings? As Artists, can we have the courage and determination to be, create, share, and push the envelope of the radiant possible? Are we willing to dream out loud our impossible dreams for our world, and draw other kindred spirits and Allies into the journey toward wholeness and holiness?

    How then shall we love?

A vast, perennial archive of powerful tools, systems, scriptures, teachings, disciplines and wisdom is now available for us to adapt to our personal and community needs, for our healing and empowerment. As Artists, are we drawing on, appreciating, and sharing these rich resources? Are we doing art that points the way to greater personal and planetary potentials for happiness and success?

    How then shall we live?

Millions of our fellow human beings today live in prisons of fear, poverty, disease, ignorance, loneliness and lack of hope. As Artists, are we creating compelling events for the collective imagination of mankind, sacred rituals and multi-media prayers which will bring enlightenment, change perception, bring floodtides of purpose, enthusiasm, regeneration, confidence, prosperity, vision and love to the global community?

    How then shall we love?

The horrors of senseless nuclear wars and accidents haunt our lives daily, an ominous program that runs silently in the background, creating a sense of anxiety, stress, and often, denial. As Artists, are we committed to first finding peace in ourselves, and then creating works which will bring peace to others in our families, communities, and in our world? Can we finally agree, as a species, that we are the world, and the world is us? Can we send this message of unity worldwide, first in our prayers, and then in whatever media we find is best suited for our unique artworks? Can we finally admit that all we need is love? As Artists, are we ready to live at the edge of history, and with our love and skill create the dawning of a new morning for our species?

    How then shall we live?

In today’s turbulent world of constant crises and threats to our very survival, there is an unprecedented need for inspired leadership and illumined vision – there is a need for hope in a dark and darkening time. As Artists, are we willing to become the new thought-leaders, the Wayfinders, and speak truth to power? Do we have the courage to be pioneers for positive change, and bring together a gathering of the Warriors of the Rainbow into a new constituency of brotherhood and right action?

    How then shall we love?

There is abundant reason for hope, and the signs are all around us if we will have the eyes and hearts to see. This hope must begin with each one of us, and be felt in our hearts, then lived, shared and embodied in the media and artifacts of this new planetary culture. As Artists, are we willing to burn with passion and persistence, like quiet candles, lighting the path of a new optimism, a new vision, a new expectancy of good, so that, through us, all mankind will feel this great love, and find inspiration to build a better world?
