  • It is always painful
when it's time to change, something
    even when it's tight,
too comfortable, the way, for example, a favorite shirt
has become like second skin, what, who
you are when you did what you did
with those you did it with
in that shirt, mountaineering when mountains
    were something
you looked forward to or down from, aspirations
as fine and rare, but pure
    as the air you breathed
    always painful

    it is always sad
to let go of that which you thought
was supposed to be forever, notions
of the sublime: love beyond decay, immune
to the assaults of the roughness
    of everyday wear-and-tear
to the spirit, to the heart that works away
anyway in and out, in and out
the rivers and rivulets of dreams, hopes,
    regrets, little triumphs (thumps) —life.
    always sad

    And thus, this testimony
    and thus, this fellowship
    and thus, this gathering
    around a fire
    for millions of human years.
