  • When my son was a toddler I supervised a Toy Library. Toy Libraries are part of a national organisation whose mission is to lend educational toys to parents of children with special needs, as well as the mainstream children.

A social worker attended one of my sessions and asked if a woman who was recovering from a stroke could come and assist me. I said I would love to have more help.

T was a very gentle woman who had just started re learning how to speak. I was fascinated by her strength of mind and willpower as she fought to find the words to communicate. I listened to what she had to say and gave her time to reach into her fogged memory and bring out a word that was relevant to a thought she wanted to convey. I have always been fascinated by language and how we acquire speech.

T helped out every Tuesday enjoying playing with the children whilst their mothers chatted among themselves; but after seven weeks of regular attendance she did not show up.

Two months later a woman phoned me. She told me gently that her mother had died and she wanted to express gratitude for my patience in helping T regain her speech. It was so wonderful to hear that she had talked about her time with me.

I was amazed that T's could phone someone who she had never met, whilst she was grieving for her mother.
