  • Survival Strategy

    By day place your attention
on the world beneath your feet.

Observe the industry of tiny creatures
as they go about their labors,

    notice nature’s generous palette
    of textures and colors
    and shapes and sizes,

contemplate the unseen roots of the oak tree
    wandering in tangled profusion
    in thick silent earth.

    Walk slowly, carefully,
presuming a small misstep could send you
    tumbling off the planet.

    By night search the sky
as if the answers to all life’s secrets
    were written in code
with the positions of the stars,

study the moon as it waxes and wanes,

    Ponder the inadequacy
of the words eternity and endless
    to describe the immensity
of what cannot ever be described
    in any language spoken
    by your mouth
    in this place.

Allow your senses to be astonished
    and overtaken entirely
    by all you experience
    in reverie of the heavens
    and regard of hidden worlds.

Then why would you allow yourself
    to be greatly disturbed
by anything which lies in between?

Photo is of me feeding a swan on the River Avon in 1974. A fond farewell to Cowbird and all its marvelous storytellers. What a joyous ride! What wonderful company! I wish you all big love and blessings.
