  • Punxatawny Phil saw his shadow the other day. Six more weeks of winter it is. In all honesty, it hasn’t been much of a winter around here, so six more weeks doesn’t feel like such a problem. It’s also consistent with what Kathy read somewhere, maybe the Farmer’s Almanac or something, that we’re supposed to get hit with a couple of big snow storms in March.

Aside from a dusting or two around here, the only snow I’ve seen this winter was when I was traveling to other places where it snowed – Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, and Williamsburg. That was enough to fulfill my need for some snow in a winter. I’d be fine if we didn’t get any from here out, but Phil says we got six more weeks coming. Thanks a lot, Phil!

I’ve gotten about halfway through the 50 Super Bowl recaps I recorded last weekend. I’ve just gotten up to the ones that no longer have John Facenda’s “Voice of God” narration, and now it’s Harry Calas, who also was the voice of the Phillies right up until the day he died, right there in the announcer’s booth before a game, a couple years ago. Facenda was also from Philly.

I really enjoy watching those recaps. That’s all the build-up I need for the Super Bowl. I don’t watch any of the hoopla on T.V., or get into any of that craziness. As for the Super Bowl, I have never attended a Super Bowl party, if you can believe it. Well, there was that time, in 2009, when we were on the first day of a cruise to the Bahamas, and my Steelers were playing the Cardinals in the Super Bowl. I watched that in the ship’s sports bar, which was kind of having a Super Bowl party. They had all these ping pong balls with “bad call” printed on them, that you could throw at the screen when the refs blew a call.
  • Other than that, as far as I’m concerned, it’s just the NFL Championship game, and I like watching it in the comfort of my home. Since I haven’t been drinking for the last 40 Super Bowls, and my understanding is Super Bowl parties are usually all about the drinking, I guess I just haven’t had much of a desire to go to one. I was in the Navy for the 4 years before that, usually out at sea or stuck on a base when the Super Bowl played.

But, I almost always watch the game, wherever I am. I missed the one in 1996, when the Steelers played the Cowboys for the third time in a Super Bowl, and lost for the first time, after 4 Super Bowl wins. I was out delivering pizzas that night. That was a big night for pizza delivery – I made a killing in tips. That was our Disney World money, back then. You did what you had to do. It was shortly after that that I decided that I would just work one job from that point on, and whatever I made there would have to be enough. Fortunately, I kept getting regular raises after that.

The Steelers, of course, won two more Super Bowls after that, the only team with 6 Super Bowl wins to their credit. The Patriots are gunning for their 5th tomorrow. I’m definitely rooting against them. I can’t stand that team. Two other teams have 5 Super Bowl wins, the Cowboys and the 49ers. The Cowboys haven’t even been to a Super Bowl since the one they beat the Steelers in, 21 years ago.

Well, I have 24 more Super Bowl recaps to catch before the big game tomorrow night. I best get back to it.
