  • "Mummy, come sit next to me", Thalia said ten minutes ago and she showed me the tiny step at the foot of her baby sister's eating high chair where not even my toe fits. "I can't baby", I said and sat on the floor instead.
    "Why not?"
"Cause I'm big, much bigger than you and there isn't enough room for me there".
She thought about it for a second. "Why are you bigger than me?"
"Cause you were born very very recently. You're a brand new little soul. I've been here for a while now".
    "What's a soul?"
    "It's a secret inside you".
    "Inside me where?"
"Nobody knows exactly. It's a secret you see."
"If I cut you down the middle will I see your soul?"
"Noooo baby. Our souls are invisible".
    "Mummy, am I your soul?"
I smiled. "In a way I guess you are, my love."

Oh, in more ways than one.
