  • My canine companion and I
    venture outdoors for the last
    of the fresh air
    from the day gone by.
Only an inch of freshly fallen snow
    softens our footsteps.
A lot doesn't happen these days.

I try to maintain my balance
as my dog is consumed by
    a bout of friskiness.
    His ninty pounds
at the end of his lead
    pulling me
    this way and that.
    It is all he needs
    yet I yearn for more,
    as the owl calls
    and a new day begins.

    We return indoors,
    He quickly settles,
    I smile as he snores.
I crack the window so to
    hear the owls and to
    quiet my thoughts and
breath in a new day's freshness
    while I retire.
