  • The desert for sure is a lonely place. It's nice to be lonely, together.

    D. and I checked in, and well, I always turn on the TV when I come into a hotel room. Even on holiday, the journalist in me wants to see. You never know. The bathroom had a TV screen built into the mirror. I wanted to try it out. I had a camera on my pocket.

The mirror flashed the BREAKING NEWS. BHUTTO ASSASSINATED. No. No. She----no.

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto had been assassinated.

My reflex was there before my head. It's a fuzzy pic, my head is from flash outer space, D. is attending to lower extremity urgencies, and the news is: no, it can't be.

It's nice when you are bereft in Vegas, to be bereft together, speechless, mute, ready to go downstairs, and gamble.

In the morning, we left for Death Valley.
