  • Every year for the last few years, my wife Pirjo makes a special patchwork for Christmas. She then photographs it, and we use it in our e-Xmas cards. This year she chose the theme of migration.. Every year, the fieldfare, a type of thrush, migrates in large quantities from Finland (where she is from) and Northern Europe, to the United Kingdom. Here, one is feeding on buckthorn. She tells me that the buckthorn produces large quantities of alcohol at a certain point in its cycle, and these poor migrants can often be seen acting drunk and disorderly, giving us people seeking a better life elsewhere a bad name.
