  • Would it not be seen
    The island of cotton falcons
    Piloncillo clouds and companion
Armed with leaves and wood forks
    And the scents of seasons

But then the newborn one dares
Opening the eyes of the earth
    Skin deep, all is silenced
    Bellowing the music
    Of universal soothing tones

    The land is lacerated
    Peeled apart, unhurriedly
Until the poles reunite in flat
    And there is nothing
But a wide road to hinterlands

    Dogs yelping in endless rows
As it all is bawled mute
    Stuffed onto the royal seats
    Where only kings and queens
    Of netherdreams are given rest

The march of the noon guardians
    The gate wardens are holding
    Spikes of marchpane and butterscotch
    To shield the lilliputian milords
    And the pint-size miladies
From the acrid vinegary of the grown
And all their bitterness and fortresses

    Striding in their brawny barefeet
    Footfalling their cackling and sniggering
Into the grand palace of you’d-believes

    Afar, at the backstory
    Sunlight waits alone
    Inviting the little ones
    in their messy gowns
    For the eventide
    In the dusk of innocence

To my dear friend, Sonya Cuff.
    Hang in there, loved one.
