  • Audio is an Apple Text-to-Speech voice reading my poem over an original song, also written by me.

crowds of strangers with familiar faces
    repainting all the familiar places
their hands are filled with kings and aces
while mine are filled with sand

screaming in vain that the world’s not real
as before false gods i brokenly kneel
for anything short of the familiar feel
    of an interlocking hand

an empty void in the darkest of nights
sucks away the illusion of wrong and right
for the hope of a single candlelight
    to illuminate what i seek

a few old words and photographs
invoke no more than a passing laugh
for he who has no second half
though he’s drowning as they speak

but i start that machine up once again
and trace the trail of flower stems
though i’ve lost my ability to find the end
    in a disconcerting way

some say they have the world to win
while i sit here with my heart of tin
so i shake hands with the wind
    and bring it back in
    for another lonely day
