  • sometimes it just feels like nothing exists.
    everything's hollow, a cheap reproduction,
and nothing has that aura that it used to.
    some props here,
    some filler material there,
    the scenery is plastic.

i feel like i could float up through the nonexistent clouds
and knock on the hollow, cardboard gates of heaven
and there would be nothing on the other side,
    no lights, no angels,
    just an empty gray stage.

i feel like i could sink into the nonexistent asphalt
and float down through the static hologram of the earth
and into the deepest pits of hell
but it will all have been shut down and abandoned,
    no fire, no heat,
    just an empty gray stage.

    why go on any further.
    the gig is up.
    i understand the punchline.
    it's not funny.

(until i feel the summer breeze coming through the window
brushing over my face, and wiping
    the dust from my mind
    and during that
    one hopeful
    second, i
    know it's
    real)
