  • The fallout from this last mass shooting was about as predictable as tidal flow charts, even with the wide varieties of variables in the equation of this latest blood fest. The usual suspects came out of the ether babbling like loons before the bodies of the dead were even cold, and their cellphones were still ringing wildly in the club by loved ones looking to see if they were alright. It was the terrorists fault! It was the easy access to high powered assault rifle's fault! It was a homophobic society's fault! Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Everyone picked their cause celeb and cleaved to it like a pit bull on a chew toy in a tug of war game. Some of the freakier elements came out of their scumbags to remind us just how twisted some of our fellow countrymen are with a few of the more vicious preacher creatures from backwoods hollers that somehow now have the internet to rain down fire and brimstone from Leviticus (which is in the Christ killers’ Jew Bible by the way). And of course a top representative of the NRA was released from his dungeon like keep to give the usual caring, from the heart statement we all know, love and expect from them. It took them two days because they had to starve him of his diet of fresh child livers to make sure he had the right focus and tone to show us they mean business this time for the 147th time this year. And the arguments from all of the various sectors and special interest groups goes up in a cacophonous chatter that blocks out any substantive discussion on a complex issue not easily solved in a quick fix.

You can always tell the depth of a person's cognitive abilities by how many factors they are able to perceive in a complex problem. In past episodes of mass murder where the gunman hadn't sprouted all of his pubes yet, some people whole heartedly put the blame on violent first person shooter video games. Others blamed psychotropic meds and/or the lack of mental health care in the country. Still others put the blame on easy access to high powered rifles and large magazine capacity, and with this latest blood bath we have the elements of Muslim extremism and homophobia and/or repressed homosexuality combined with a nutter of father figure who immigrated into this country, puts out a pro-Taliban rant fest cable access show and avoids the CIA drone missile strike by living in the USA, genius strategy on his part. I can't wait until the backstory on that one fills out a bit more.

The rambling point I'm trying to get at here is that it's not just one element causing the violence. Sure, removing easy access to assault weapons will make these mass shooting events harder to execute, and obviously some sensible firearm laws like keeping the insane, violent wife beating assholes and potential terrorists on watch lists from owning a firearm will help. Having more options for mental health other than having to wait for little Jimmy to stop skinning the neighbors' cats before grabbing a couple of his daddy's random pistols lying around the house to shoot up the school would be nice. But in the end, all of these factors play into an equation that's not easily solved by simple quick fixes.

We live in an empire on the decline where tens of millions of middle class paying jobs have been outsourced since the 1970s causing pain and suffering on the masses; we’ve been at war almost steadily since WWII with Korea, Vietnam, Central America, Iraq Part I, Afghanistan and Iraq II plus a litany of other small scale CIA ran proxy wars, coups and regime changes too numerous to list here, all of which cause blowback; our entertainment consists of endless violent movies, propaganda war films and first person shooter video games; our mental health care system is nothing more than pharmaceutical companies pumping pills into the populace at such massive quantities that it’s showing up in the fish caught off of our shores; our small arms sales to citizens is only rivaled on a per capita basis by parts of the world already engaged in full warfare, and with this last bullet fest, we now have the specter of homophobia added into the mass murder equation instead of the usual one offs from violent psychopaths that make the news daily. All of these are factors, whether you want to admit it or not. And, unless you’re ready to smash the entire wretched system from the top down, this will probably still continue unabated. Tomorrow, or some day in the very near future, another wingnut with a head full of bad wiring and an agenda (politically motivated or not), will take that arms and munition collection to the target of his (or her) choice and begin the most American of past times, mass murder; it’s the American way.
