  • What is means to be Lakota? That questions has been always been asked by people who want to know what it means to be Lakota. Many Lakota people have different definitions what being Lakota. Some say going to Pow-wows, or going to Sundance’s, or even going to sweats. I define being Lakota as having my family. Maybe family isn’t being Lakota to others, but it is for me.

Family plays a major role in my life. For as long as I can remember, my family has always been there for me when I needed them. They help me when I am going through tough challenges in my life. I put my family first before I put anyone else, some say put of yourself first before you put everyone else before you. Maybe they are right, I should think of myself before others. But I chose not to. I chose to put my family needs before my needs.

My grandmother has always put her family needs before hers. I am following in my grandmothers footsteps. It may be wrong to others but as a Lakota woman it is what I was supposed to do. Being Lakota isn’t just going to pow-wows, sundances, or even sweats. Many people have different definitions about being Lakota. No matter if it is being Lakota or not, but the definitions that are define are what it means to be Lakota.
