  • It was an emotional day, walking on the wall where my grandfather walked many years ago as a member of the US Marines. His name was Andrew Carsten Nilsen. He was gentle and kind, compassionate and stubbornly generous with everything he had. He never talked about his travels or time in the military (it might've been too hard for him), but I found this photo a year ago in some old albums and made a resolution to take it to the Great Wall someday. I wish I had had the sense to ask him about his life when I was growing up, but I like the idea that we share this little memory now - feeling the wind blowing cool over the wall and looking out on the green-blue mountains. I imagine him thinking just how beautiful the world can be and how lucky we are to get to experience it.
