  • Outside of the little hamlet that is Allen, South Dakota, there is a small ranch that some call the Tallman Ranch. A few generations ago, my grandfather Vernon Tallman had worked up to the point where he was able to buy land that belonged to him. Then there's the fact that he was a 'real' cowboy. As history has written the cowboy's dream was always to get his own ranch. My grandfather taught me that through hardwork and persistence, you can acheive anything. I've only known my grandfather through the stories told by my family members who were lucky enough to see my grandfather alive, but I know in my heart that we share a kinship that even death cannot seperate.
The symbol that I've always associated with my family's history and legacy is the cow brand that my grandfather used. Though it is no longer used by my family, I, however, use it as a reminder of my grandfather's legacy.
An upright 'T' with a sideways 'P' on its top. This symbol is carved into a sign that hangs from chains in front of my grandma's house that was built by my family, including my grandfather. The sign is the 'official' sign of the Tallman Family, declaring it the family ranch.
But though the future generations of the family, it may change over the years to come...that symbol will be the 'first' fo a long line of brands that are to come.
