  • It's been a rough couple of weeks. About year ago, I went with the fiber optics phone line because every time it rained, my phone line and DSL went out and it was a lot cheaper (only until my contract ran out, then it went up, but still cheaper than the phone line). I was not happy with it, internet speed varied, was much slower than the DSL and it turned out to be even less reliable, because it was getting wet too. When the power goes out there is no phone, no nothing after their backup battery goes dead and in the boonies, the power goes out more often than living in town. So they fixed that part, or rather stapled it together awhile back instead of finishing the digging up of the line that they started about 5 years ago and then just left it half done. Now it became a crisis and was going out two or three times a day and required rebooting the modem 3 or 4 times before I could get it working again.

In the meantime, Window 10 became insistent and would start downloading when I turned my back on the computer and I was seriously considering tying it around my waist so I could tote it to the mailbox and the 'loo', etc to keep it from being violently assaulted against its will. I would click the X to close the window (and I then read online that Windows considered that a consent--a yes and not a no, 1984 had a word for that, which I've forgotten, double speak maybe?), so that didn't stop it and it would say it was deleting files, etc. I would then dash to the modem and pull the plug, and it would say, that download had been interrupted, bla bla, which meant re-starting it over and over to get phone, internet and wifi working again.
  • My personal email has accumulated over 1500 emails, and during all this I'm getting my summer class up online, which started last Tuesday and most of the crap went on over the holiday weekend. I finally called the help line and that stupid robot voice tells me how to reboot and to call back when I'm done if it doesn't work. I wait a couple minutes and call again, it tells me to restart my computer, I wait a couple minutes and call back again and finally get a person who tells me to do a bunch of other things that I've already done at least 60 billion times and I need repair. I can't understand what she is saying because fiber optics it not as clear and it sounds like Peanut's mother in the cartoon movies, of all vowels and no consonants…raour wo wa ah oo, whatever. And would I give them my cell phone number as a back up? What for? We don't have cell phone service out in the boonies, let's get that fixed too, like another tower??? People in the middle of the boonies in Africa get better cell phone service.

Help finally arrives the next morning and they mess with it and check everything out and determine that the line must be dug up which takes two days as they have to get the gas company out to mark their lines before they can dig. I finally call my computer guy up in KY and get an appointment for Friday and they dug the line up (took all day) that day also and now I am good to go. Windows 10 is blocked. The WINDOW is boarded up. Hopefully. Until they figure out a way to mess with us again.
  • I have two lines coming in the house and I'm thinking about getting straight basic service on the other line for when everything goes down and I have threatened the phone company that I want my old phone line and DSL again. Phone guy told me that they want everyone on fiber optics so they can do away with the copper lines and that there are so few people with phones in my neighborhood that it’s a loss for them (lots of summer and part timers with cell phone boosters or they just do without). Kind of like they forced us from analogue to digital, and the analogue was better. Kind of like Micro suck forcing Windows 10 on us. Kind of like 1984.

I remember back in the 90's when I first got email, this little thingy would come up on the screen to check to make sure I didn't have a pirate copy and had paid for my Windows, and now they are giving it away for free? There must be a plot here. They are getting something out of this, and like I told the computer guy, soon they will be peering at us through our camera and eavesdropping on our conversations through the mike. He said hackers can already do that. I will remember to always be properly dressed from now on when I walk by my computer when it is on.

PS, he also has been fixing people's computers who put them on hibernate before they go to bed and in the morning they wake up and are now the surprised and sorry owners/slaves of Windows 10, so turn your computer off at night.

Well, folks, 1984 has finally arrived.

The first photo is a back alley in TN and the second one is in KY. Thanks for reading my ramblings on this Saturday morning.
