  • January 2004, Paris - 'Arnab,' said the HR guy, 'we have not been able to find a place for you in the new organisation. I realise that this will be disappointing news for you but I am sure you understand the situation.'

    16 years man and boy - straight from high school as a sponsored student, university and then back to the firm. £250M worth of orders, a life dedicated to the company, half my life on a plane but, nevertheless, part of the cull of the old regime as a new one took over. Not that I was senior management but I was part of their staff and also had to go regardless of past performance.

    But, you know what, maybe this was a blessing. And I say 'maybe' only because I am afraid that I am rationalising a bad moment and making it good. Six months of a notice period, redundancy pay, six weeks of no work and then, out of the blue, a contractor / independent consultant role. Which, in eighteen months, turned into a permanent role at close to double the salary in an organisation that is domestic.

    And here's the crux of this story. In November 2005 came our wonderful, wonderful son. And, not having to travel, I have come home almost every night by six thirty / seven. Having learnt that loyalty runs only one way, I have worked enough but put myself first. I have done the night feeds, cut his first nails, potty trained, stayed up through fevers, taught him to hold his pencil properly, gone swimming, dropped him off at school. Read him stories, taken him to films, played swing ball in the garden.

    I / we have been lucky that I can afford to make that time. If you are too, my suggestion is, make the time.
