    Post Boxes

The Post Box has been in existence since 1653, in France, but became universal there in 1829. The first one in Britain was installed on the Channel Island of Jersey in 1852. The idea had been mooted in 1840 by William Rowland Hill, the inventor of the postage stamp, but it was the novelist Anthony Trollope who, functioning as a postal surveyor who oversaw its propagation.
