    La mort du Loup

Susan Perly's story on the dying beauty of fading tulips inspired this.

In the poem La Mort du Loup by Alfred de Vigny, the poet narrates a wolf hunt which ends up with his party shooting a proud wolf and then watching him die.

I can only offer a sort of translation:

That last look of yours went straight to my heart
It said: If by dint of pensive introspection
You can make your soul arrive
To this high level of stoic pride
Where, born in the woods, I first ascended
Whimper and weep, praying, all equally cowardly
Do with all your might your long arduous duty
On the path where Fate has driven you,
Then like me, suffer and die without protest.
