  • Here is Georgy, our blue tongued skink. Georgy came out to play yesterday.

Georgy entered our life one and a half years ago.

My son Ben wanted an exotic pet. We first had a milk snake called Fang, which escaped a few months afterwards. Fang was a beautiful creature, which might still be sneaking around somewhere in our house, hidden in a tight corner somewhere.

Ben was terribly upset of losing Fang. He wanted something bigger, more exotic.

Ben is a good boy. We couldn't say no, could we?

Of course, Georgy is not my ideal pet. I never like things that crawl. I don't like things that crawl, wriggle, and hiss.

Before I had a son, I had never envisaged I would live with a large lizard.

My ideal home is sweet and tidy and it smells of roses.

Now Georgy lives in a 4 ft x 2 ft x 2 ft vivarium in the lounge.

Georgy needs food, so we keep crickets in the lounge. Crickets eats cucumber and tomatoes.

Georgy needs mice, so we keep dead mice in the freezer.

Georgy needs fruit, so we share half a banana, half a pear with her.

    Georgy smells.

Ben is happy. Hugh is happy. Father and son are happy.

I've grown used to the smell of Georgy. When Georgy pokes her blue tongue out, I get excited too.

My house doesn't smell of roses.
