"That's how it always happened with the women I got involved with. They'd collide with me and BOOM!"

"But how'd you meet the woman you were married to?"

"Like that. It's too long a story to tell. I was living on Fire Island."

    "When was that?"

    "1978. Memorial Day weekend."

"I was up there that same weekend -- well, I was in that part of the world. I went to Woodstock. Chappaquiddick. Did you know a DJ up there? His girlfriend passed away?"

"No. Anyway. I had decided I was done being gay. I wasn't dating any women, but I was done."

    "Like that?"

"Like that. Well, there was this guy. I'd been best friends with him."

    "How old were you?"

    "22?"

    "And he was straight?"

"Oh yeah, he was straight. I was taking a shower once and he just got in the shower with me. And, BOOM, I had an erection. And he didn't. So one day he introduces me to this girl. She was a stewardess and he knew I was a steward. He thought we'd hit it off."

    "That's your wife?"

"Ex-wife. Yeah. She was still married then, but... oh, this is too long a story to tell."

    "No, no!"

"Well, her husband was in prison."

    "For what?"

"Killing a guy. He didn't mean to, apparently."

    "Jesus...."

    "Right?"

"Where were they keeping him? Upstate?"

"Yeah, and she would see him occasionally in the beginning. But then she stopped going."

    "Because of you?"

    "Because of me."
