    The Vaporetto Experience

    Although the scale is different, the Vaporetto Experience can only be compared to the Indian Railway Experience. Indian Railways is India’s largest employer (the world’s second largest).

    In a city where there is no provision for cars, the only viable form of transport has necessarily got to be water-based. Gondolas are a tourist thing, and make no contribution to the conveying bodies from A to B. For this we have the Vaporetto, a motorised launch with a capacity of about one hundred.

    Strewn along the canals are floating quays serving as stations. The network of routes is not dissimilar to London Underground or the Paris Metro, with about 20 stations, and the frequency is more than adequate; it is manned by an efficient and courteous crew of two.

    A single ticket is quite dear, but there are deals. We bought a 3-day pass for 33 Euros, and used it extensively to go everywhere. The journeys are pleasant and comfortable, although sometimes a bit overcrowded.

    What makes for a stunning experience is the landscape, on either side of he canal one is travelling, there are architectural treasures and their reflections in the surprisingly clear water.Venetians are not the most extroverted of Italians, but the courtesy as people board or disembark was very impressive.
